The April 20, 2011 meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held at Vinnie’s in Lynchburg, VA.

The meeting was called to order at 12:00 pm by William "Bill" Barbour.

Motion was made by Benny Montgomery seconded by Sharon Warren to accept the minutes as posted.

There was an interesting round-table discussion of the current tax season with interesting high lights of both pleasant and difficult problems encountered by the members.

The consensus of the members present was not to have a party this May.

The president appointed a nominating committee consisting of Benny Montgomery, Michael Harrison and Charles Spencer to report a slate of officers to our June meeting.

Upon motion, the meeting was adjourned.

Meeting Minutes - May 15, 2011

The May 18, 2011 meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held at Famous Anthony's 460 East location in Roanoke, Va.

The meeting was called to order at 12:14 p.m. by William "Bill" Barbour,
President.

The minutes from the April 20, 2011 were approved.

There was no old business.

Under new business, Charles Spencer advised the members Gear Up, the VASEA training firm, was not coming to Roanoke this year. However, NATP will be coming to Roanoke.

Charles also read an email he received from Frank Degan regarding keeping the name Enrolled Agent:
The vote to keep the name was close 7-6. This is consistent with about a 50-50 split among members in this regard. There was an earlier motion at the Board meeting to change the name to Federal Tax Specialist - that motion lost by a vote of about 10-3 (not exactly sure but I think that's what it was).

I voted to keep the name for a number of reasons. The June survey put out by NAEA was defective - it used the word certified as a choice. C230 says you can't use it. It's beyond me why that choice (actually I think there were two choices using certified) was given. Some members commented that if certified could not be used, then they wanted to keep the name. When you look at the results, it's about 50-50 (probably what it was in 2002 when this came up and also when Les Shapiro was DOP and he offered to change the name if agreement could be reached on a new name). There is NO consensus on a new name. There are probably about 3 or 4 leading choices.

There was also no given that IRS would adopt any name suggested by NAEA. Actually, they sought more than one name to be submitted. There is no doubt in my mind that any possible new name would be vetted with the other professional organizations and then, of course, with IRS and Treasury legal counsel. Thus, NAEA could suggest a name and it would go nowhere.

I was also concerned about all the state legislation that needs to be addressed. NYSSEA spent over $40,000 last year on a law suit to get enrolled agents to be treated on a basis comparable to CPAs and attorneys for purposes of NYS preparer registration. No one wants to go through that nonsense again.

It seems to me that the name is not the problem - it's the promotion. If we change the name 50% will be unhappy - if we don't change the name perhaps we can make the other 50% happy (or at least happier). I believe NAEA will try to adopt a tag line to describe what EAs do and help promote the name.

Some eaxamples (sic): Enrolled Agents - providers of tax CPR or Enrolled Agents - your trusted tax specialists.

Hope this is of some help.
Frank
A lively discussion followed.

There was no other new business.

From 12:46 pm to 1:57 pm (1 hour 11 minutes), William (Bill) D. Barbour, EA held a question and answer round table discussion.

The June meeting will be a continuation of Bill's presentation.

Upon motion, the meeting was adjourned.

Nancy H. Lynch, EA
Secretary
