The June 15, 2011 meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held at Famous Anthony's 460 East location in Roanoke, VA. The meeting was called to order at 12:04 p.m. by William "Bill" Barbour, President. From 12:05 to 12:25 there was a round table discussion of 2010 tax filing season problems. The regular order of business began at 12:25 p.m. Due to the absence of our Secretary, Nancy Lynch the minutes from the prior meeting were not available. There was no old business. Under new business, David Tanner asked for ideas for programs. He has currently received the following suggestions; Bartering, Pros/Cons of Reverse Mortgages (possibly 2 meetings), NOLs, and IRS Changes/Updates (David contacting the local IRS office). The next order of business was our elections. All positions are for a two (2) year term; July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013. The following slate of Officers and Directors was presented by the Nominating Committee: President — David R. Tanner Vice President — Michael G. Harrison Treasurer — Gunther (Fritz) Greimel Secretary — Nancy H. Lynch Director — William (Bill) D. Barbour Director — Benny R. Montgomery Director — Charles R. Spencer Sharon Tabor Warren moved the slate be elected as presented; Benny R. Montgomery seconded; and the vote was unanimous. At 12:50 p.m. William (Bill) D. The July 20, 2011 meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held at Famous Anthony's in Roanoke, Va. The meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m. by David Tanner, President. The minutes of the June, 2011 meeting were approved as distributed. David gave a list of the topics for future meetings, namely: August will be Tom Tanner, Counselor of the Small Business Administration. September Sharon T. Warren will present the drawbacks to Reverse Mortgages. At the December meeting Gail Abbott will give an overview of the 2011 IRS Forum. There was some discussion regarding the advantages and disadvantages of remaining in the NAEA and the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents. The August 17th meeting is tentatively scheduled for Rocky Mount. At 1:07 p.m. David Tanner gave a presentation on the benefits of Reverse Mortgages and the requirements for qualifying. Qualifying property could be single family homes, condos, or units in a building. The property owner must have counseling prior to getting a reverse mortgage and carry mortgage insurance as well as keep up the property, have hazard insurance and pay all property taxes. The August 18th meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held at Famous Anthony's in Roanoke, Va. The meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m. by David Tanner, President. The minutes of the May and July meetings were approved as posted. Charles Spencer made a motion seconded by Nancy Lynch and carried by the chapter to continue the web site for another year at a total cost of $339.99. Michael Harrison attended the VASEA meeting in Fredericksburg to develop ways of reaching more EAs not located in metropolitan cities or counties. In response, Rosemary McMahon, VASEA President; Heather Greenwell, Administrator and Jim Lam, Director attended our meeting to discuss our ideas, their thoughts and suggestions for future plans to improve the location of meetings. There was a spirited discussion with some ideas and suggestions to help with locations. The September meeting will be held in Lynchburg with speakers on the drawbacks to reverse mortgages. The October meeting will be a speaker from the IRS and the December meeting's speaker will talk on Ethics. Upon motion the meeting was adjourned. Nancy H. Lynch, EA Secretary |
