The September 15, 2010 meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held at Famous Anthony's in Roanoke, Va. The meeting was called to order at 12:20 p.m. by William D. Barbour, President. Motion was made by Sharon Warren seconded by Mary Moore to approve the minutes of the Aug. 18, 2010 meeting as posted. A treasurer's report was presented by Gunther Greimel. Motion was made by Charles Spencer seconded by Sharon Warren to reimburse Charles for the web site expenses of $114.99 and to pay JTK Web the annual fee of $225.00 for maintaining the web site. Walter Jones, guest speaker spoke about his 28 years experience with the Internal Revenue Service. His CID experiences have proven valuable in representation work for clients he has after retirement from the IRS. Some points he emphasized were to ask for administrative summons if the IRS wants documents and keep copies of anything you give the IRS. As professionals, we need a healthy dose of skepticism and any advice you give is never any better than the information you have. Don't say anything you don't want played back in court. There were many other useful points brought out. One hour of CPE will be given. The October 20, 2010 meeting will be in Lynchburg with additional information to be posted on the web site. The October 20, 2010 meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held at Vinnie's Italian Grill & Pizzeria in Lynchburg, Va. The meeting was called to order at 12:50 p.m. by William D. Barbour, President. Upon motion by David Tanner, seconded by Charles Spencer, the minutes of the previous meeting were approved as posted on the web site. Old business discussed included the fact that previous members who have not paid their dues have had their names dropped from the chapter website. Fritz Greimel gave the treasurer's report. The Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents is looking for someone from the Blue Ridge region to be on the nominating committee. Nancy Lynch volunteered. Gear Up has cancelled the education scheduled for the Roanoke area. Only 6 people had signed up and they needed at least 10 to continue; 10 - 11 people were planning to attend (at least) but the event was cancelled before they all signed up. Charles Spencer mentioned that he had called Heather Greenwell and complained about the article Al Thompson had in the Virginia Voice. He felt that it was a political statement and should have been a paid political advertisement. Therefore, the state chapter is providing equal time to Frank Degen. Benny Montgomery gave a presentation based on Circular 230 and Ethics, which lasted for one hour. One CPE credit will be given for attendance during this presentation. The December 15, 2010 meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held at Famous Anthony’s 460 East location in Roanoke, Va. The meeting was called to order at 12:05 P.M. by William D. Barbour, President. Motion was made by Charles Spencer seconded by Mary Moore to approve the minutes of the October 19, 2010 meeting. William Barbour presented an hour of education covering recent changes in the tax code as it will affect 2010 and later tax returns. The January 19, 2011 meeting will be held at the Westlake Country Club at 12:00 noon. There was some discussion on having an after tax season party on May 7, 2011 at 1:00 P. M. at the home of Heather Maheu-Muller. This will be discussed more at our next meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 P.M. Nancy H. Lynch, Secretary |
