The June meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Ippy's in Rocky Mount, VA. Rebecca Donehew, President, called the meeting to order at 12:10 p.m. Sharon Warren made a motion to revise the April minutes by removing a sentence intended as levity. The motion was seconded and approved. The slate of officers/directors presented by the Nominating Committee were: William Barbour, President; David Tanner, Vice-President; Nancy Lynch, Secretary; Gunther Greimel, Treasurer; Directors, Charles Spencer, Michael Harrison, and Benny Montgomery. The floor was opened for any additional nominations. No additional nominations were made. Motion was made by Sharon Warren to accept the slate of officers and approve their election by acclamation. The motion was seconded and approved. Congratulations to our new officers and directors. There being no old business to discuss, President Donehew introduced Diane Beverly and Jim Lam, members of the VASEA Board of Directors. Ms. Beverly spoke about her opinion that the western areas of the state are under served by VASEA and offered assistance in strengthening this region. The IRS push to license preparers was discussed, and the need to better inform the public of what an EA is was also discussed. Motion was made by Sharon Warren to accept the May minutes as presented. The motion was seconded and approved. Following lunch, at 12:50 p.m., Clyde Holland Perdue, Attorney, spoke about real estate transactions and the paperwork involved in reporting the various components of the transactions on various forms including the HUD Settlement Statement, so tax preparers can appropriately determine how to report the costs involved. The July meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held July 15, 2009 at Szechuan Restaurant in Roanoke, VA. The meeting was called to order at 12:05 p.m. by William D. Barbour, President, who thanked the membership for the honor of electing him president. Nancy Lynch presented information from Diane Beverly concerning VASEA’s efforts to try to involve the Southwestern part of the state more in participating in the state society. Nancy mentioned the meeting on July 22 in Glen Allen with the IRS managers concerning collections and auditing. Nancy also reported she had contacted the new members of VASEA from our area and due to short notice and conflicts none were able to attend although several expressed interest in attending our meetings. The schedule of meetings and topics for education was discussed and plans are as follows: HSA presentation in Roanoke for August with a guest speaker Ethics in September in Lynchburg by Benny Montgomery Local Commissioner of Revenue, with William Barbour contacting Nancy Horn to request her to speak No meeting scheduled for November Federal & State update report by Nancy Lynch & Gail Abbott At 1:25 p.m. William Barbour began his presentation on current information on Health Savings Accounts; Passive Losses and Discharge of Indebtedness; Hobby - for-profit endeavor; Rules for determining eligibility and amount of the first-time homebuyer credit. The August meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held August 19, 2009 at Famous Anthony's on Williamson Road in Roanoke, VA. The meeting was called to order at 12:05 p.m. by William Barbour, President. Motion was made by Rebecca Donehew to accept the minutes of the July 15, 2009 meeting as posted on the website. Motion was made by Sharon Warren seconded by Rebecca Donehew to accept the treasurer's report as presented by Gunther Greimel. At 12:40 p.m. John B. Vellines of Health Savings Administrators in Richmond, Va. began his presentation on Health Savings Accounts. The presentation concluded at 1:50 p.m. and 1 hour of CPE will be awarded.
