The July meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Famous Anthony's in Roanoke.

President Becky Donehew called the meeting to order at 12:45 p.m.

Becky Donehew introduced a new VASEA member - Heather Maheu-Muller.

Charles Spencer, VASEA Board member, reported the Virginia Society is sponsoring a 25th Anniversary Cruise in August 2008. He handed out a flyer and asked anyone interested to contact Barbara Taylor for more information.

In the absence of David Tanner, Charles Spencer gave the Treasurer's report.

A discussion of Quickfinders and The Tax Book orders was held. David Tanner will be taking orders for the Chapter, however if you wish to order your own please use the numbers below so the Virginia Society will receive a rebate per order.

Quickfinder - Q830
The Tax Book - 231

Charles Spencer discussed the upcoming renewal of the Website Domain Name registration and Hosting. He recommended switching from Easyspace to Hostdime. He indicated the Chapter would save approximately $55 per year. However, that might be offset by the expense of the switch in the first year, but would save money in subsequent years. It will also mean having a host in the U. S. vs. in London. He also reported the annual fee charged by the Web Mistress will be going from $175 to $200.

Bill Barbour made a motion to move the website hosting and Becky Donehew seconded, all were in favor, none opposed.

Charles then discussed the new Preparer Penalties in the Small Business Work Opportunity Act of 2007. He also discussed the future of Form 8453 - it will no longer be used for sending in the taxpayer's signature only additional forms and information.

Gail Abbott began her presentation on Alternative Minimum Tax at 1:00 p.m. and concluded at 1:50 p.m. It was a very informative presentation and we thank Gail for her presentation.

The meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

Charles R. Spencer, EA
Acting Secretary

NOTE: An after meeting discussion was held between Becky Donehew and Charles Spencer about next month's meeting. It was decided we would return to Famous Anthony's and the topic would be Section 179 presented by Becky and Charles.

The August meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, August 15th, 2007, at Famous Anthony’s, Williamson Road, in Roanoke.

President Rebecca Donehew called the meeting to order at 12:08.

Attendees were reminded that annual chapter dues of $15 were due July 1st. Checks should be made payable to Blue Ridge Chapter and mailed to David Tanner, 5007 Carriage Drive, Suite G-1, Roanoke 24018.

David had no Treasurer’s Report. He will take orders for reference books (Quickfinders and The Tax Book) but no prices are available at this time. There is a break in price, due to shipping and handling charges, if we order through David in quantity.

Benny Montgomery will present an hour of Ethics at the September meeting. This plus an hour earned for those who attend NCPE in November will fulfill the annual requirement. That meeting will be September 19th at Famous Anthony’s, Williamson Road, Roanoke.

Bill Barbour added that NATP will also have training available in Roanoke in early December that will include 2 hours of Ethics. Check www.natptax.com for details.

Charles Spencer read a letter from NATP regarding the tax gap.

Lunch was served and following the meal at 12:40, Charles began the Section 179 presentation. Although Section 179 is something we as tax preparers use frequently, it seems there’s always one detail or more that has been forgotten or that can lead to questions. Between Charles and Becky Donahew who also presented, it was an informative topic that concluded at 1:30.

The meeting adjourned at 1:45.

Sharon Tabor Warren, EA
Secretary
