The January meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, January 17th, 2007, at China Super Buffet in Lynchburg.

President Michael Harrison called the meeting to order at 12:05.

David Tanner distributed the Quickfinders and Tax Books (All states did not arrive). There was no treasurer's report but anyone who may still owe for the reference material is urged to mail David a check ASAP. You can check with him for amounts and his mailing address.

Michael Harrison suggested the group come up with topics for discussions/CPE for the coming year. Topics will be distributed prior to the meeting and members are urged to bring answers, questions, comments, and source material on the subject to the meeting. A facilitator will be selected for each topic.

The topic for the April meeting will be "Deductibility of Health Insurance for S-Corporations." Michael Harrison will facilitate. The meeting will be Wednesday the 18th at Famous Anthony's (Williamson Road) in Roanoke. David Tanner will book the location.

An additional topic of Record Retention was suggested for a future meeting.

Following lunch, at 12:55, Michael Harrison presented the CPE, "Compensation for Shareholders in an S-Corporation." As always, the topic invited a lot of discussion and some war stories. A member said as an IRS Agent, he would go for maximum compensation to shareholders in a small corporation unless there were extenuating reasons to keep funds in Retained Earnings; however, as an EA representing a client, he would take the opposite position. Bottom line: it's a case-by-case situation and there's room to bargain. One hour of CPE will be given.

The meeting adjourned at 2:05.

Secretary

The April meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, April 18th, 2007, at Famous Anthony's, Williamson Road, in Roanoke.

President Michael Harrison called the meeting to order at 12:05.

Michael was able to deliver five minutes on his topic of health insurance for S-Corp shareholders before the meal was served.

At 12:45 the meeting was resumed. Charles Spencer, a Director with VASEA gave an update on the abrupt resignation of Mike Hall, the state society's Executive Director, in mid-January. He also gave the chapter insight on VASEA's contract with Catapult Management Company, a professional association management firm. The present contract runs through June of this year and bids will be solicited for a future management contract.

During the travail of immediate removal of all VASEA records and equipment from Hall's home office, many hours and miles were expensed by President Winston Macon, Director Steve Rue and Treasurer Barbara Taylor. They packed, moved, stored and eventually delivered. Gail Abbot suggested a letter of appreciation be sent to them from the chapter. President Michael Harrison will do this.

Sharon Tabor Warren read a touching e-mail regarding the Virginia Tech Tragedy of April 16th, 2007.

Michael resumed his comments on S-Corps and health insurance at 1:15 and concluded at 1:20. A quarter hour of CPE will be given.

Training for the May meeting was discussed. Benny Montgomery agreed to make a short presentation on how to read a HUD statement, a topic requested by David Tanner. He cautioned it would not fulfill our usual CPE slot of one hour.

Charles Spencer said there had been a tax return devised by NAEA member that several professionals had completed with varying results. He suggested it be made available to the membership and that we work on it and bring our solutions with appropriate cites to the May meeting. Discussion, under the guidance of Charles, should fill the hour. If it runs longer, we may continue for more than the hour or carry it over to the June meeting.

The meeting will be Wednesday the 16th at Ippy's in Rocky Mount. Nancy Lynch will make arrangements for the site. If anyone has not received the tax return for May's meeting, please contact David Tanner at dtannerea@aol.com.

The meeting adjourned at 2:05.
