The June meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, June 21, at Montano's Restaurant in Roanoke.

President Michael Harrison opened the business meeting at 12:30 while we waited for lunch.

Mike will contact Bill Barbour re his choice of location for the July meeting. Bill will present on the topic of Section 125 plans. He is now certified to set up these plans and will also cover some of the legal ramifications associated with them.

Mike volunteered to present the September program on changes to IRS collections procedures. The meeting will be held in Lynchburg.

We are without program topics for October and December (there is no meeting in November because of NCPE and Virginia Tech seminars that month). Charles suggested that Rebecca contact any one or several of the leading firms of attorneys in Roanoke and ask them for speakers. She agreed to do that for October.

Nancy Lynch requested we ask someone from the State Department of Taxation to speak in December regarding changes for the 2006 returns. Mike agreed to contact them but noted they were not willing to come last year.

Sharon Tabor Warren requested a full treasurer's report since none has been made available since our former treasurer resigned.

Vice President Rebecca Donahew, newly elected Director of VASEA, reported on the recent VASEA Spring Seminar. As usual, our geographic area is overlooked for future seminars. Charles Spencer, also a Director, has pled our case during his time on the board, it's hoped Becky's added voice will carry some weight. Becky said the incoming Vice-President of VASEA, Alexander Thompson, EA, is committed to attendance at one of our chapter meetings during the upcoming fiscal year.

Remember, the August 16th meeting will be held at Ippy's in Rocky Mount. Gail Abbott and Becky Donahew will cover the topic of Aliens: Resident and Non-resident, Legal and Illegal.

The meeting adjourned with the service of lunch. No CPE is available.

Respectfully submitted,

Sharon Tabor Warren, EA
Secretary

The July meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at the Szechuan Restaurant in Roanoke.

President Michael Harrison called the meeting to order at noon and a business meeting was held and then lunch was served.

During the business meeting, Nancy Lynch brought the subject about the state treasurer being a signature on the local chapter's bank account. The members present were not in agreement that the Virginia Society Treasurer be a signer on the account and asked Charles Spencer to make a proposal at the next VASEA Board of Directors meeting to change the Society By-Laws. Further a decision was made to have two signatures on the local chapter account (Treasurer and President). A motion was made by Benny Montgomery and seconded by Bill Barbour and the vote was unanimous.

David Tanner gave the treasurer's report. There has been no activity since our June meeting.
David Tanner asked that we look at some of the other tax books and see if everyone still wants to use Quickfinder or if everyone wants to buy their choice. The state (VASEA) does receive a portion of the sale of Quickfinders through the chapter sales.

Remember, the August 16th meeting will be held at Ippy's in Rocky Mount. Gail Abbott and Becky Donahew will cover the topic of Aliens: Resident and Non-resident, Legal and Illegal.

After lunch the education program started at 12:45 PM and concluded at 1:40 PM. Bill Barbour presented a program on the topic of Section 125 plans. He is now certified to set up these plans and also covered some of the legal ramifications associated with them. Ray Lingle also gave information on setting up these plans.

The meeting adjourned at 1:55 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Rebecca Donehew, EA

The August meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at Ippy's Restaurant in Rocky Mount.

President Michael Harrison called the meeting to order at 12:25. He announced the location for the September Meeting will be Merredith's Fine Dining at the Plaza in Lynchburg. That will be on September 20th at noon. Mike will present the CPE for the meeting on the topic of The IRS' New Collection Procedures.
He also asked members to remain for a short meeting of the Executive Council following the presentation of the program.

David Tanner advised he had 2005 copies of the new reference, The Tax Book. This book was published for the first time this past year by the staff that had previously compiled the Quickfinders (their jobs were made redundant when Thompson acquired Quickfunder). Several members used and liked the new book (a single volume for individual and business plus an All-States volume). The price differences are not great between The Tax Book and the Quickfinder but the chapter will receive a small profit from volume sales. The books were passed around for those present to inspect.

David Tanner gave the treasurer's report. There has been no activity since our July meeting.

After lunch the education program started at 1:10 PM and concluded at 2:00 PM. Rebecca Donahew presented a program on the topic of Aliens - Legal and Illegal that was enjoyed by all.

The meeting adjourned at 2:00 PM and was followed by the meeting of the Executive Council.

Respectfully submitted,

Sharon Tabor Warren, EA
Secretary

Executive Meeting Minutes - August 16, 2006

The meeting was called to order by Michael Harrison.

The first topic on the agenda was the matter of non-compliance by the Chapter in respect to financial reporting to Virginia. Fritz Greimel volunteered to put the Chapter's books on QuickBooks and provide David with a quarterly report that can be submitted to VASEA per the Chapter Guidance. Initially, he will provide the annual report for July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006, with quarterly and annual reports to continue from July 1, 2006. David admitted he'd paid for speakers' lunches himself without reimbursement and he was asked to let the Chapter reimburse him in the future.

The nominal five-dollar fee for non-members who attend a meeting when CPE is offered was brought up and it was decided that the fee would be charged henceforth because it was a source of funds for the Chapter and five dollars for an hour of CPE is a bargain.

Nancy Lynch announced that guest Andy Turner is submitting an application as an Associate member of VASEA. Andy's practice is in Rocky Mount.

There was limited discussion about the possibility of bringing Paul LaMonaca (NSTP) to the area for a class in 2007. Sharon Tabor Warren said she's attended Paul's classes in Williamsburg on numerous occasions and they are exceptional.

The meeting adjourned at 2:40 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Sharon Tabor Warren, EA
Secretary
