The January meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, January 18, at Szechuan Restaurant in Roanoke. Following lunch, President Michael Harrison opened the business meeting at 12:30. Benny pointed out new requirement for 90% of taxes to be paid in with Virginia extensions by May 1st, even though the filing with extensions forms will no longer be required. David apologized for not bringing the CPE certificates but promised he would have them for the April meeting. If anyone needs to confirm hours, contact Sharon at stwarrenea@adelphia.net. Benny asked if there had been further word regarding the Tobacco Buyout program. No one knew of anything official although Sharon said she'd heard the bank handling the distribution of funds was issuing 1099s for 2006, not 2005, and has, as last heard, stood by its position that the income is not includable on 2005 tax returns for calendar year taxpayers. There was also some discussion of the new Schedule D filing requirements for 2005 returns. The IRS will no longer allow "Details on request" or similar language; we must supply the details on Form D-1 unless the broker's statement is in the same format as the IRS's form, in which case it can be attached to a paper-filed return or submitted with Form 8453 for an e-filed return. It was also noted the IRS has backed down on its presentation of time and costs for tax prep that was discussed in our December meeting. In the absence of our Program Chairperson, no April program or location was discussed. The meeting is scheduled for April 19, 2006. Check the website for updated information on subject and place. There will be no meeting in February or March. Following the business meeting, at 12:48, A. Karl Ehlshlager , CLU, ChFC presented an hour of education on Medicare Part D (Prescription Plan). It is obvious that the information is confusing and difficult to obtain and/or understand for those who are eligible, especially those without computer access. There is also an unanswered question, posed by Karl, of whether or not the monthly costs are deductible medical expenses. The prescription plan, unlike Medicare, is not structured as insurance. Some taxpayers paid costs in 2005. The meeting adjourned at 1:55. Respectfully submitted, Sharon Tabor Warren, EA Secretary |

The May meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, May 17, at Szechuan Restaurant in Roanoke. Following lunch, Michael Wade, Investment Representative with Edward Jones gave a presentation on Tax-Free Investing. David did not bring the 2005 CPE certificates. Anyone who needs the certificate for 2005 CPE hours, should contact David personally and ask him to mail it. President Michael Harrison opened the business meeting at 1:30. Mike asked for suggestions for other meeting places, questioned a need for additional funds and how money could be raised. There was discussion re places to meet with no conclusions but Becky Donahew said she'd check around and report back. The possibility of a seminar, open to all tax preparers in the area, was discussed. It was noted it's probably too late to plan anything for 2006. Charles advised how strict VASEA is about anything we present as training/CPE. Becky Donahew announced the June meeting (June 21st) will be held at Montano's and she will present the highlights from the VASEA Spring Conference. Bill Barbour offered to present the program for July 19th on Benefit Plans; no site has been determined. The August 16th meeting will be held at Ippy's in Rocky Mount. Gail Abbott and Becky Donahew will cover the topic of Aliens: Resident and Non-resident, Legal and Illegal. The meeting adjourned at 2:07; 1 hour of CPE is available. Respectfully submitted, Sharon Tabor Warren, EA Secretary |
