The October meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, October 19, at China Super Buffet in Lynchburg. President Michael Harrison opened the business meeting at 12:10. He presented an invoice from Webmaster Janeson Keeley and asked for a motion re: payment of the same. Fritz Greimel moved that we pay the bill. Sharon Tabor Warren amended the motion that the website would be continued and the bill paid annually until such time the membership deemed it needed to be discontinued and/or other changes made. The vote was unanimous. Michael asked for member input on the December meeting. He has obtained a speaker from the North Carolina Department of Revenue but mentioned the location would have to be Danville because of travel restrictions of NCDOR. It was decided the presentation would be deferred. Mike said he would contact the Virginia Department of Taxation regarding a speaker in Roanoke for December. There will be no November meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter because of date conflict with the annual tax seminar presented by Virginia Tech. Fritz moved on that and the vote was unanimous. Following lunch, at 1:10, Sharon Tabor Warren presented "The Paperless Office." The presentation included statistics, advantages, disadvantages and how to's. Suggestions were also given on how to go partial paperless with the advantage of saving paper, associated products, and storage space. One hour of CPE will be given. The meeting adjourned at 2:00. Respectfully submitted, Sharon Tabor Warren, EA Secretary |

The December meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, December 14, at Szechuan Restaurant in Roanoke. Following lunch, President, Michael Harrison opened the business meeting at 12:53. Gail Abbott shared copies of Estimated Average Preparation Times and Out-of-Pocket Expenses by Return Preparation Method (page 79 of the 2005 1040 instructions). The bottom line is the IRS thinks it takes much longer than it does for a paid professional to complete its forms, and they don't think we're worth much per hour. David Tanner announced he has two copies of the book from the NCPE Fall Update Seminar at $25 each. There was some discussion about the poor service offered by the Clarion Hotel for the seminar and it's hoped that VaSEA will consider an alternate location for 2006. The January program was discussed. The meeting will be on its regularly scheduled date at the Szechuan and the speaker will be, A. Karl Ehlshager, an independent insurance agent from Roanoke. Karl will speak on Medicare Part D (prescription coverage) and address other social security issues that are brought to the table. Anne Wood shared a list of the mailing addresses for 2005 forms for Virginia taxpayers. All addresses have changed. Following the business meeting, at 1:05, Benny Montgomery presented an hour of education on the Domestic Production Activities Deduction. The meeting adjourned at 2:00. Respectfully submitted, Sharon Tabor Warren, EA Secretary |
