Charles mentioned the IRS will give a seminar on e-servicing in Charlottesville on August 17th. There is no charge and it will be worth 5 CPEs. Unfortunately, that's the date of our scheduled August meeting.

Charles also commented on the availability of the following: Virginia Legislative Summary: http://www.tax.virginia.gov/Web_PDFs/2005LegislativeSummary.pdf; Notice 2005-51, Tobacco Buyout http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-05-51.pdf and Office of Chief Counsel Memorandum re deduction of health insurance for a self-employed person on Schedule C http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-wd/0524001.pdf. He also urged members to contact Senators Warner and Allen urging their support of Senate Bill 714, which would make it illegal for companies to send junk faxes. Check http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm for addresses, telephone numbers and email.

Following these comments, Gail Abbott presented an hour of CPE (1:05-1:55) on the IRS and Virginia updates as presented at VaSEA's seminar in Fredericksburg. She covered the K-1 matching program; distributed copies of the updated Circular 230; and spoke about the new one-size-fits-all definition for qualifying child; W-4 changes; Highway Use Tax updates; new limitations on charitable contributions of vehicles and Clean Fuel Vehicle credit phase-out as presented by the IRS. On the Virginia side, she included Pass through Entities; Unified Returns and Legislative Changes and some clarification on subtraction for federal and Virginia government employees. Class 6 Felonies can now be assessed for preparers of fraudulent returns. The Commissioner voiced strong opposition to Land Conservation Incentives due to abuses.

The meeting adjourned at 2:00.
