The June meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at the Szechuan Restaurant in Roanoke. Nancy Lynch, President called the meeting to order at 12:45 p.m. Fritz Greimel presented the slate of officers for the years 2005-2007 as prepared by the Nominating Committee; They were as follows: Officers: President - Michael G. Harrison Vice President - Rebecca Donehew Secretary - Sharon Tabor Warren Treasurer - David R. Tanner Board of Directors: Fritz Greimel Benny Montgomery Mary Moore Nancy asked for additional nominations from the floor. There being none, Benny moved the slate be accepted as presented. The vote was unanimous. Charles Spencer reported on the programs for the remainder of the year: August 17th - Dr. Helen M. Roybark will speak on Private Letter Rulings at Montano's in Roanoke. NCPE will hold their two-day seminar on November 3rd and 4th. Virginia Tech will hold their two-day seminar on November 15th and 16th. Charles mentioned the IRS will give a seminar on e-servicing in Charlottesville on August 17th. There is no charge and it will be worth 5 CPEs. Unfortunately, that's the date of our scheduled August meeting. Charles also commented on the availability of the following: Virginia Legislative Summary: http://www.tax.virginia.gov/Web_PDFs/2005LegislativeSummary.pdf; Notice 2005-51, Tobacco Buyout http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-05-51.pdf and Office of Chief Counsel Memorandum re deduction of health insurance for a self-employed person on Schedule C http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-wd/0524001.pdf. He also urged members to contact Senators Warner and Allen urging their support of Senate Bill 714, which would make it illegal for companies to send junk faxes. Following these comments, Gail Abbott presented an hour of CPE (1:05-1:55) on the IRS and Virginia updates as presented at VaSEA's seminar in Fredericksburg. She covered the K-1 matching program; distributed copies of the updated Circular 230; and spoke about the new one-size-fits-all definition for qualifying child; W-4 changes; Highway Use Tax updates; new limitations on charitable contributions of vehicles and Clean Fuel Vehicle credit phase-out as presented by the IRS. On the Virginia side, she included Pass through Entities; Unified Returns and Legislative Changes and some clarification on subtraction for federal and Virginia government employees. Class 6 Felonies can now be assessed for preparers of fraudulent returns. The Commissioner voiced strong opposition to Land Conservation Incentives due to abuses. The meeting adjourned at 2:00. The August meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, August 17, at Montano's Restaurant in Roanoke. Michael Harrison, President, called the meeting to order at 12:25 p.m. Mike announced the North Carolina Department of Revenue expressed no interest in presenting a program in December. Charles Spencer asked that Mike contact Virginia; the date will be determined by the availability of a speaker. There will be two meetings in September. The regularly scheduled meeting on September 21st at Ippy's in Rocky Mount when Benny Montgomery will present CPE on Ethics, plus Friday, September 30th at Montano's in Roanoke. The IRS will send a speaker on the topic of e-services. This is the only available date for the speaker. Mike Hall, Director, VASEA, has asked for a volunteer coordinator for the NCPE classes in November. David Tanner agreed to act in that capacity. Charles reminded everyone the website will be purged of non-paid members September 1st. Following the business meeting and lunch, Helen M. Roybark, Ph.S., Ed.S., CPA, CFE, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Accounting at Radford University, presented 1.5 hours CPE (12:50-2:10) on the subject of Private Letter Rulings. The September meeting of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents was held on Wednesday, September 21, at Ippy's in Rocky Mount The only officer present was David R. Tanner. No business was presented. Following lunch, Benny Montgomery presented two hours on Ethics and the revised Circular 230. He presented many anecdotes from his years in business and talked about our responsibilities as Enrolled Agents. The meeting adjourned at 2:15. Respectfully submitted, David R.
