This meeting was a seminar entitled "Virginia Tax Update" and was held at the Salem Civic Center (www.salemciviccenter.com) Conference Room, Salem, Virginia. The seminar was called to order by Mike Harrison, Vice President, at 10:00 a.m. He introduced Ms. Lee Mikelson and she introduced the representatives from the Virginia Department of Taxation. Our first speaker was Mr. Gerald Gwaltney. Mr. Gwaltney spoke from 10:00 am to 10:30 am on Legislative changes, department changes and processing statistics. Our next speaker was Mr. Howard Overbey. Mr. Overbey spoke from 10:30 am to 11:00 am on the paper processing of returns and storage. Next to speak was Ms. Lee Mikelson. Ms. Mikelson spoke from 11:00 am to 12:45 pm with a 10 min. break. She covered the many changes in Virginia tax changes, especially the change in the Age Deduction. Last to speak was Ms. Pam Inge. Ms. Inge concluded the presentation by speaking from 12:45 pm to 1:00 pm on Customer Service. We thank the Virginia Department of Taxation for making this seminar possible. The meeting was held at the Szechuan Restaurant in Roanoke, VA. Lunch was served from Noon to 12:30 p.m. Nancy Lynch called the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m. and introduced our speakers, Elizabeth Obenshain (Obenshain@newriverlandtrust.org), Executive Director, New River Land Trust (www.newriverlandtrust.org) and Diane W. Green, CPA (dianegreen.cpa@verizon.net), Board Member and Treasurer, New River Land Trust. Diane and Elizabeth spoke on Conservation Easements and their associated tax implications (contributions and credits) as well as some Estate tax planning issues Click here for a copy of the Sample Contract presented during the meeting. Diane and Elizabeth presented an informative presentation and we appreciated their efforts. Their presentation concluded at 1:30 p.m. There was a brief business meeting at which we decided to separate the Secretary/Treasurer into two positions at our next election. We decided the next meeting will be April 20, 2005 and will be a round table discussion of the filing season at the Szechuan Restaurant in Roanoke, VA. The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m. David R.
